The History of God
VOL. III — HENOTHEISM → MONOTHEISM

Vol. III · The History of God

Henotheism → Monotheism

c. 1200 BCE – 100 CE

First one god above the others. Then only one.

Between the polytheistic pantheons and the monotheistic systems lies a transitional grammar — henotheism. One god is supreme; others may exist but matter less. The Hebrew Bible opens in henotheism (YHWH is supreme, but other gods exist) and closes in strict monotheism. The 50 theophany scenes in this volume trace that arc — Eden, Sinai, the still small voice, the chariot vision, the burning bush.

182 visual depictions of biblical theophanies — every moment the divine becomes visible, audible, or otherwise present, in canonical narrative order.
