VOL. I — ANIMISM
Vol. I · The History of God
Animism
Pre-history – present (animism is continuous)
Before the gods had names, every thing had a voice.
The wind, the river, the owl on the fence-post at dusk. Animism is the oldest grammar of belief — that to be alive is to be encountered, and that the world is full of breath. It survives in every later religion as a substrate, even when explicit theology has moved on.
Visual depictions of animal spirits, sacred landscapes, and cosmic forces — the visual vocabulary every later religion would inherit.
